4. MAUAO HĪKOI

THINGS TO NOTE

  • Te Kuia is half-way - most of the kōrero is on the southern side of Mauao, and its takes approx. 20 minutes to walk from Te Kuia to base non-stop, so keep this in mind when you reach Te Kuia.
  • Where possible, deliver your kōrero in shaded areas.  Where there is no shade, limit your time spent there.
  • Take your time - don't speed around thinking you might run out of time. They have paid to spend 90 minutes on Mauao, so allow for photos, reading of signs, taking in the scenery.
  • Most accidents and trips happen on the last leg of the walk.  Remind them to walk with purpose.
  • Kōrero for all locations can be found here - Ngā Kōrero ō Mauao

STOPS

  • Te Puna Waitapu - Karakia
  • Pilot Jetty - Legend of Mauao
  • Waipatukākahu - Weaving station
  • Shell Midden - Te Paritaha
  • Te Kawa - Beach walk
  • Te Kuia - Ngā Motu
  • Tirikawa - Tākitimu
  • Return to base * **

* For groups on the Mauao hīkoi only, the following options may apply

  • Some guests may want to walk to the summit, so stop at the stone steps and provide details
  • Some guests may want to go to a cafe or go to town, so stop outside the surf club and show them the cafes, or walk to Maunganui Rd and show the directions to town

All guests on the Walk and Workshop should be encouraged to return to base

** For school or business/social groups, you may want to deliver karakia at Tirikawa and leave them there to continue exploring
